Guardians of the Revolution, or Revolutionary Guards

Iranian military organization created in 1979 to protect the Islamic Revolution. (www.encyclopedia.com) In the beginning they were created to protect demonstrators from the Shah’s forces, to ensure their right to voice their opposition to the Shah’s rule. Later, these guardians would take on duties such as harassing and arresting women not properly veiled, as well as breaking up illegal parties and/or for demonstrating “Western” tendencies and sympathies.
